Links are changing on X (formerly Twitter)

What's changing with links in your X posts, what happens automatically, and the options you can turn on.

X is now charging for every post that contains a tappable link, and shows those posts to fewer people. Rather than pass that cost on to you, we've changed how links work in your X posts. The link URL is still in your post, but followers copy it rather than tap it.

We've also added two new ways for followers to reach your pages.

Why we made this change

  • Cost. X now charges $0.20 for every post with a tappable link when shared via API. For an account posting three times a day, that's about $18 a month, more than our Pro plan. We're not passing that cost on to you.

  • Reach. X shows posts with tappable links to fewer people, so your posts now have a better chance of being seen.

What happens automatically

You don't need to do anything for your posts to keep working.

  • Your posts look much the same. We still include your content's image, though tapping the image won't open your page.

  • Your link URL is visible. Your post includes it in a clean format, like example.com/mypage, ready for followers to copy.

Options you can turn on

Link page

A page we host that lists what you share on X, each item linking to your content. It works like "link in bio" on Instagram, and it's included on every plan.

  1. Turn on the link page for each X profile: go to Outputs, expand your X output, click Link Page, and turn on the dlvr.it link page toggle.

  2. Copy that profile's link page URL with Copy link.

  3. Paste it into the Website field of that X profile.

You only need to do this once per profile. See Your link page (link in bio) in dlvr.it for the full steps.

QR codes

Add a small QR code to the bottom-right corner of your post images. Followers scan it with their phone camera to go straight to your content. Turn it on for each X profile in your X output's settings, on the Post Options tab. If a feed item has no image of its own, we'll generate one showing the title and domain on a solid background, with the QR code on the right.

See Add QR codes to your X posts for the full steps, including posts you write yourself in Compose Post.

Frequently asked questions

What changed about links in my X posts? Your link URL still appears in every post, but it's no longer a tappable link. Followers copy it into their browser instead. X began charging $0.20 for every post containing a tappable link when shared via API, and shows those posts to fewer people, so we moved your posts off them.

Will my posts look different? Your image is still there, so the post looks much the same. The difference is that tapping the image won't open your page.

What if my feed item has no image? If you've turned on QR codes, we generate one for you: your article's title and domain on a solid background, with the QR code on the right. If QR codes are off, the post goes out without an image.

Do QR codes apply to all my X profiles? QR codes are a per-profile setting, so you can have them on for some X profiles and off for others. Turn them on or off for any profile in that X output's settings, on the Post Options tab.

Can I turn off both the link URL and QR codes? Yes. Your post will go out with just your text and image, with no link URL in it. Note that posts with no link URL don't appear on your link page either, since there's nothing for it to link to.

What is a link page? A page we host for you that lists what you share on X, newest first, each item linking to your content. Think of it as "link in bio" for X. It's included on every plan.

I have more than one X profile. Do I need a link page for each? Yes. Each X profile gets its own link page, which you turn on separately.

Why did X do this? That's a question for X. They introduced per-post pricing for links shared via their API, and applied reduced distribution to posts containing them.

Does this affect links I post to X myself? No. Posting directly from X's own app or website is unaffected. The change applies to posts published through scheduling tools like dlvr.it.

Does this affect my other social networks? No. This only applies to posts on X.

Will my price change? No.
