Google Analytics link tracking tags in dlvr.it

Learn how to add Google Analytics tracking tags to your links, how to set them up for social media ROI reporting, and how to remove them if they're causing broken links.

dlvr.it can automatically append Google Analytics tracking tags to every link it shares β€” giving you visibility into how much traffic your social posts are driving to your site. This article explains how to set them up, what they look like, and how to remove them if they're causing issues.

How tracking tags work

When tracking tags are enabled, dlvr.it appends parameters to your destination URL before sharing it. For example:

http://www.my-site.com/social-media-roi

becomes:

http://www.my-site.com/social-media-roi?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

dlvr.it automatically handles the ? or & separator, so you don't need to worry about formatting. In your Google Analytics reports, look for source = dlvr.it in your traffic sources.

Note: Do not paste your Google Analytics JavaScript tracking code here. This field is for UTM link tags only.

  1. Log into dlvr.it and click the Socials tab.

  2. Click the social account you want to add tracking to.

  5. Enter your tracking parameters in the Analytics box. You can:

    • Click the Google Analytics option to quickly insert standard UTM tags

    • Use the available variable options to customize tags for more precise source tracking

  6. Click Save.

Once saved, all future posts through this social account will include the tracking tags on every link.

Removing tracking tags (and fixing broken links)

For most sites, tracking tags work without any issues. However, some sites are sensitive to URL appends and may return a 404 or error page when tags are added β€” resulting in broken links for your readers.

If your links are broken or not working as expected, removing the tracking tags is the fastest fix.

  1. Log into dlvr.it and click the Socials tab.

  2. Click the social account you want to update.

  3. Click Edit, then click the Links tab.

  4. Scroll to the Analytics box and delete all the text inside it.

  5. Click Save.

All future posts through this social account will now use the original, unmodified link.

Why are my links broken?

If your links stopped working, the most common cause is the tracking tag append. Check the Analytics box (steps above) and clear it if there's anything in there.

In rare cases, the link itself may be broken independently of dlvr.it β€” for example, if the URL in your RSS feed is malformed or points to a page that no longer exists. If clearing the Analytics box doesn't fix the issue, check the original link in your feed directly.

Using the No Shortener option? When dlvr.it posts full, unshortened URLs, tracking tags are not added automatically. See: Posting full, unshortened URLs in dlvr.it.
