A few things worth knowing
Images can affect your character count
On some platforms — including X / Twitter and LinkedIn — adding an image to a post reduces the number of characters available for text. If you notice your character count dropping when media is attached, that's the platform factoring the image into your allotment.
Mastodon mentions When mentioning a user on Mastodon (for example, @[email protected]), only the username portion (jane) counts toward your character limit. The domain (@exampleserver.com) is not counted.
API limits vs. native limits
In some cases, the character limits above are stricter than what you'd see when posting directly on the platform. This is because social networks sometimes impose tighter limits through their API — the access they provide to third-party tools like dlvr.it — than they do on their own native apps.
